Artist Bio:
“The Highs & The Lows” created by Yannis Davy Guibinga is a reflection of time and weathering, seen through the lens of young Black men in countries not of their own. Composed of shots from Gabon, Canada, The United States, Italy and France, the piece gives a global context to Black folks who are more than aware of life’s ups and downs. The imagery frames the two between waters, at times falling and at others flying. Through words, image and sound, the piece illustrates both the melancholy of perseverance and the peace of knowing things won’t always be perfect. “The Highs & The Lows” is an unmasking of joy and pain and it celebrates the cyclical connection between the two. The art was first unveiled in Paris where, in 1961, 300 black citizens were murdered in a state sanctioned genocide by drowning in response to Algeria’s decolonization. The piece is displayed above the waters in France upturned, giving a new sense of agency to its subject. With “The Highs & The Lows,” Guibinga and The Rapper have captured the duality of emotions felt by billions of Black people around the world, who overtime have given themselves agency.
