Artist Bio:
Naïla Opiangah is a visual artist born and raised in Libreville, Gabon - she currently lives and works between New York City and Accra, Ghana. At 18, she moved to Chicago to study architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology. She graduated with a B-Arch and practiced at firms around the country. Naïla returned to her love of painting a few years later. She only committed herself to this medium after realizing she didn’t need a BFA or MFA to truly be a painter. Her pieces tell complex human stories through abstract representation of the Black female figure.
Chance met Naïla on his first trip to Accra, Ghana at her studio space in 2022 – they spoke about collecting art. The Rapper was skeptical in calling himself a collector because he associated it with the capitalistic practice of consumption and exploitation of visual artists. Naïla and Chance discussed the parallels of exploitation in the music & fine arts industries - they spoke about the hurdles they faced being independent in worlds that commodify artists. The two challenged themselves to find ways to empower and create communities for both visual and musical artists - all while creating new works.
